How does stress affect your immune system?

14 Jun 2024 0 Comments

Stress is a natural reaction of the body to challenging or threatening situations. However, when stress becomes chronic, it can have profound negative effects on our health, especially our immune system.

The impact of stress on the immune system

Chronic stress affects the immune system in several ways:

Elevated cortisol levels

When we are stressed, our bodies produce cortisol, a hormone that, at high and sustained levels, can suppress the effectiveness of immune cells such as T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells. These cells are crucial for defending the body against infections and diseases. Elevated cortisol can also reduce antibody production, decreasing the body's ability to remember and fight off previously encountered pathogens.

Decreased cytokine production

Cytokines are important proteins in communication between immune cells. Stress can reduce cytokine production, impairing the immune system's ability to coordinate an effective response against pathogens. Without adequate cytokine production, the body has difficulty initiating and maintaining an adequate immune response, increasing the risk of infection and disease.

Chronic inflammation

Prolonged stress can lead to chronic inflammation, which not only compromises the immune system, but is also associated with diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders. Chronic inflammation damages tissues and organs, creating a perpetual cycle of stress and immune system impairment.

Increased susceptibility to infections

Stressed people are more likely to get sick because their immune system is less able to fight off viruses and bacteria. They may also experience slower recovery from illness and injury. Chronic stress can also reactivate dormant infections, such as herpes, that the immune system kept under control when it was in better condition.

Adaptogens, stress and the immune system

To combat the negative effects of stress on the immune system, adaptogens are an excellent choice. These plants and mushrooms with specific qualities help the body adapt to stress and maintain an internal balance, while strengthening the immune system.

There are various adaptogen options that act to improve the body's response to times of stress and others strengthen the immune system. The important thing is the right combination. Here are some examples of two of our formulas:

Adaptogens in Energyheal

  1. Schizandra: May increase a person's ability to adapt to stress.
  2. Sum: Reduces stress.
  3. Ashwagandha: Helps the body deal with stress.

Adaptogens in Immuneheal

  1. Siberian Ginseng: Supports the immune system.
  2. Reishi: Contributes to natural immune defenses.
  3. Kang Jang: Helps strengthen the immune system.

Chronic stress can have a significant impact on your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to infections and illness. However, adaptogens offer a natural and effective solution. Products such as Energyheal and Immuneheal, which contain adaptogens such as schizandra, suma, ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, reishi and kang jang, not only help you manage stress, but also strengthen your immune system. Incorporating these adaptogens into your daily routine can be an important step towards a healthier, more balanced life.
